In the beautiful Fränkische Schweiz of Bavaria, on the River Wiesent . . .
The "Franconian Switzerland", a region in Northern Bavaria, is one of the oldest and most popular holiday areas on Germany. The creative artists of the Romantic movement once discovered this region and gave it this name. There is hardly any other stretch of countryside that holds as many contrasts within such a small area: soaring towers atop rocky cliffs, winding valleys, blossoming orchards, mysterious and enchanting caves. Unspoiled nature, sometimes endearing, sometimes rather harsh, but always worth a journey of discovery at any time of the year.
After an hour and a half drive into the Bavarian valley known as the Franconian Switzerland, we stopped at an old railroad station not too far from the town of Pottenstein. Outdoor Recreation instructors had given us basic canoeing instruction on Monday not far from camp, and were there with all the canoes and equipment. A few more instructions, with safety gear adjusted to fit and we were on the water for a long, tiring but exciting, trip down the river.
Cool temperatures in the mid to high 60s Fahrenheit; sunny but not overwhelming. No rain for a while . . . water low. A good day to be on the river.
