LAND NAVIGATION AT LAND NAVIGATION COURSE NORTH, GRAFENWöHR
Right after the water survival training at the Grafenwöhr City Pool, Company A stays in their swiming gear and heads for canoe training at Lake Grafenwöhr (more about the canoe trip on Tuesday and Wednesday!!), while Company B changes into dry ACUs and heads for the Land Nav training area to sharpen their compass skills. The navigation training promises to be difficult due to heavy rains in the area during the last couple of weeks. It's a wooded area and will require teams of cadets to cooperate fully in order to find the points on their maps. The cadre provided detailed hands on map and compass instruction (for some it's remedial training) on Sunday afternoon; at Land Nav North cadets check their pace and head out into the field in teams of four or five. Cadets have about two hours to locate four points; most will not succeed.
This Land Navigation site is the same site used by the Non-Commissioned Officers Academy to train Soldiers. It's tough. It's demanding. It's challenging. Besides the swampy ground, there are bugs, itchy weed and lots of obstacles in the form of ditches and fallen trees. Cadets who "survive" this event will certainly have lots to brag about back home. Those who do not will at least have some stories to tell.
After a lunch of MREs, the two companies switch places. Company B reports to the canoe training at Lake Grafenwöhr, while Company A changes into ACUs and tackles Land Nav North!
This event is the first that counts towards the coveted Honor Platoon Award. The platoon with the most points found out of 24 possible (six teams x four points/team) won. Here are the results freshly printed off the S3's computer:
1. Bravo Company, 1st Platoon
2. Alpha Company, 1st Platoon
3. Bravo Company, 2nd Platoon
4. Alpha Company, 2nd Platoon
(Addition Honor Platoon events this week include: Drill Competition, Sports, & the Leader's Reaction Course.)
